hi all,
i recieved email from someone opening a gallery in
april in another state who is interested in my work
(saw it on-line). i don't have alot of experience
with approaching galleries. i don't really have the
skill, time, or burning desire to market myself that
way. but, having said that, i'll go where i'm wanted!
(flattery will get you everywhere!)
the one gallery i'm in now is a few hours from me.
they approached me. i went to the location to see
it and talked to the people involved.
that made all the difference. i go there
periodically, so i can see what's going on.
i've read the horror stories on clayart before
about how galleries come and go, and how it's
possible for the artist to lose their work when
this happens, or not get paid when work is sold,
etc...
so! how does one go about "checking out"a new
gallery (or the gallery owner) when they cannot
be seen with my own eyes? i searched the web for
info on both but found little. i know about
consignment contracts and that having one is a must.
but what do you do BEFORE you get to that point?
is it my gut (that i should listen to) or just plain
fear (that i should work through) that makes me
uncomfortable?
thanks for any advice!
lauren

Lauren, My feeling is that if you can't go see the gallery, owner &
talk to them in person it isn't worth it. Unless it is a well known
gallery, in which case you should be able to find a lot on the internet
about them ( web site ). Now if Garth Clark contacted me....... :-)

Pro forma only. That means you make the work. You notify them that the
shipment is ready. They send you the money. You make sure the check
clears. You send the work. Any other arrangement leaves you open to
loosing both your work and payment for it. The only exception is if you
know the people who are opening the gallery and have a very good opinion
of their ability to run a gallery successfully and to pay you before
themselves.

Lauren, if they like your work that well, they'll buy it outright at
wholesale. YOu don't want to do consignment further away that an hour or
so; you won't otherwise be able to "keep tabs" on them to be sure your work
stays visible and in good condition.

You did not say whether this was consignment or wholesale.
Consignment out of state - NO - unless you personally know
the owners or have a close friend who will drop in often to
make sure they are still in business and are reporting sales
accurately.
This address should be on your 'Favourites' if you
are selling or considering selling your work.
