Hi Ingeborg,
If you merely hand it to the Driver when he is already
there, without having made it a scheduled "pick up", it
costs you nothing.

I'm not a huge volume shipper but I've used UPS for close to two years now
and have had nothing but good service.
I set up a UPS account and weigh my packages on an old bathroom scale. I
take the dimensions of the box and work out the details on line including
printing my own label. I can set up same day pick up which is $5.00 a bit
steep I think since the UPS truck drives by my shop twice a day. If I
schedule next day pick up, it is $2.00. If I take it to a UPS authorized
center (private contractor) the contractor charges me $2.00 just to throw it
on the floor until the UPS truck comes. So, it's a no brainer to have it
picked up for $2.00. If I happen to be going to town, I can drop it off for
free at the UPS store without standing in line since it is prepaid. They
have never NOT picked up the package and so far I've not had any breakage.
I do pack things according to their specs. Two inches of packing around the
entire item. My driver is polite and happy.
My billing has been correct, except when I made a mistake . Yes, shipping
is expensive. Yes there is a fuel surcharge and an extra charge to ship to a
residential address. I find all of that nickel and dime stuff annoying .
The US Post office is worse. Give them a package, who knows where it will
go unless you start with the add ons: would you like to track it...extra;
would you like insurance, extra; would you like confirmation receipt
extra; bla bla bla
I've not tried any of the other shippers except US Post Office so I can't
compare. UPS is doing a fine job for this potter on this little island 17
miles from one end to the other.
Sincerely,

If you purchase your USPS postage online, delivery confirmation is free.
They'll do residential pickup for free next day if it can be picked up
during your normal delivery (request pickup online). They provide _free_
Priority Mail boxes (if you can fit in their standard sizes) and will
deliver them for free.
I've used these features (though on a small scale) and have had no trouble
with them. It's been over ten years since I've had a real problem with
the USPS. I buy a lot of stuff online and many retailers are using the
USPS. I just received a shipment of tea from Upton[*] via USPS, shipped
on Tuesday, received on Friday. You can't get two or three day service
from the other shippers without paying extra. The only time UPS can get
here in three days with regular ground shipping is when the shipper is
less than 200 miles away... and then the USPS can it here in just one day.
* - (You guys and your tea. I had to go order some samples of this "fine
tea" from Upton just to see what you're all raving on about. I spent
thirty bucks on dead leaves and my wife thinks I'm stupid, and it's all
your fault. :)
