Hello all you experienced potters! I am so anxious for all of you to
impart your wisdom on me.
I currently work at a contemporary studio and have been working on a
number of designs that I'd like to decorate on hand-built and slip cast
porcelain and stoneware pieces. I've read up a ton on mold making, firing,
etc. My main area or concern is that I've only had experience with
comercial glazes. I'd like my pieces to be functional and dinnerware
safe....without question. Not alot of the material I've come across has
touched on this. I'm not a chemist.
I enjoy decorating with Mayco, Spectrum, and Amaco glazes, but with
stoneware and porcelain bodies, with these comercial glazes will they
vitrify with the piece, will they need a high fire clear glaze for those
that would typically use one at low fire temperatures? Is there a danger
of shivering?
Also, concerning stains, such as those available from Spectrum and
Mason...are they dinnerware safe when mixed in a casting body? I haven't
found answers anywhere for these questions.
Perhaps this all seems a little naive, but it's a good place for me to
start my inquiries I think as these are the broader questions that I have.
I'll have tons more questions after this though. Hopefully you guys will
see it as a great way to mentor a beginner! I'm so very appreciative!
Thanks!
