Hi Mel I posted this to the list but I do not think
it got there so I am reposting it to you sorry if its a bit late
thanks.
Kathy
Les I find that interesting. I posted Wes Rolley offlist
to wonder whether or not tonmoku was a "style" or a "genre"
of pottery. I am also Canadian and seem to recall a discussion
about this taking place at a workshop in Red Deer some years ago.
Jim Etzkorn was the workshop instructor and he had some beautiful
slides of "tenmoku" pots with him then.
And.... at another workshop that was held in BC
I can vaguely remember attending a show
where all of the pots were tenmoku pots. All had glazes that were
what we would call iron saturate . I actually bought two pieces.
One is a bowl by Walter Dexter glazed with an iron saturate glaze
and a Mount St. Helen's slip ash glaze that crackles, the other
is a woodfired t-bowl by Wayne Ngan.
Both are spectaculare examples of what has become known genericly
as tenmoku type glazes.
in any event, I love the iron saturate glazes and I do wish that I were
closer to people who were working with them and with woodfiring.
Celadons, shino's and iron saturates are my favorite glazes. The sad part,
as we have discussed before on this list, is that these are what I call
"potters" glazes. They are appreciated, but only by a certain audience.
I would love to learn more about tenmoku whether it be a glaze or a style.
Kathy

I find it interesting to be discussing temoku as a glaze.
I just attended a workshop given by Paul Davis at our Guild in Parksvulle,
B.C. Canada According to Paul, "tenmoku" is not a glaze but the shapr of a
tea bowl made in a particular place in Japan.
Any takers?
