Looking through the archives, I didn't see any announcement about David
Leach's death in February 2005. I thought the clay community should take
note of the passing of a fine gentleman and an important connection.

I was very fortunate to see his retrospective show that had toured in the UK
(where I missed it) in Tokyo at the Mengei-kan Museum this past October. It
was his first show in Japan, the place of his birth, and it felt like the
right place to see it! He was taught to throw by Shoji Hamada, not by his
father Bernard, so that made it all the more appropriate. In the adjoining
rooms was a spectacular show of Bernard and Hamada together. Wow!

Thank you Corinne, for cluing us it.

I saw his work in Tokyo at the benefit for the remodeling of the new
gallery at the Mingeikan a couple years ago, along side the Work of
Warren MacKenzie, Tatsuzo Shimaoka and also work designed by Sori
Yanagi. I also heard a great panel discussion related to Mingei
between Sori Yanagi and MacKenzie, moderated by Shimaoka. It really
helped me clarify my understanding of Mingei. It is not well
understood by potters, even here in Japan.
