shooting black

the problems are:

far too much reflection off of everything in the room.
hot spots galore.

so, this is what we did for the piece in cm..first page.

shot the pix at night.
not a light in the room. we used low light florescent
photo bulbs. four of them. black background.

we moved the light source around and around...found
a decent condition. you just have keep looking, searching.
one pot, one photo, four hours.

with the nikon d70 digital we manually shot at
f22/ 6, 9, 14 seconds. of course tripod, steady floor.

we tried some dull spray, but it kills the pots.
we want some reflection so people know it is a shiny
glaze...but man, photo floods kill everything.

i am still not totally happy with that photo. it is a bit
too orange. the real pot has more of a white quality
on the rhodes. it shows better on the website. but, we
don't worry about publication from the web.

sherman was very patient, but he did ask several times
to re/shoot. and i more than respect his opinion. he wanted
some great photos, and we did what we could.

my former student and professional photographer went a bit
nuts too. he is the director of quality photos for best buy..
so, he knows his stuff.

but i have to say, the pix were as hard to get as the glazing
and firing. (i had to laugh, we showed the cd rom of the chinese
glazes at mudfire/atlanta...erik loaded the images to his hard drive
and realized....`my god, there are 283 images`. we did some
deletions. i am never timid with film or images.

What kind of diffusion material were you shooting shining the lights
through?
