I use a ceramic fiber board called "M" board 1" thick. There may be
another fiber board that is even stronger. A few years ago when I bought
the material it came in a 2 ft. x 4 ft. x 1" thick sheet for around
$40. Contact Donna or Marshall at Smith- Sharpe 866-545-6743

Hello=20
What are most people using for the damper on their kiln? I picture kiln =
shelves cracking from the thermal shock. I was wondering about using =
fiber board, but never seeing the stuff before I'm wondering if fiber =
board would be durable enough.
p.s. The flue I've built is exactly as Nil's double-venturi.
Thanks for any advice

I just use a mullite kiln shelf the same as what's inside my
kiln...has lasted 27 firings so far....

epicenter of a 3.5 earthquake this a.m. (yes, the kiln is just
fine...it survived the 6.7 Nisqually quake three years ago, made
me proud!)

Hi Peter,
I am also building a kiln using Nil's double-venturi. I'd be interested
to hear more about your kiln. Size, bag-walls or not, arch or flat-top,
etc. Just curious.

I have been using a metal damper for some time now. I get a sheet of metal
from the supplier (10" or 12" x 20 ft.)and have a friend cut it to
length. I just turn it over after each firing. Lasts a long time and is
really cheap ($3.00 per damper)
Hope it helps,
