Has anyone ever used Axner's centering/opening tool
(http://www.pottery-books.com/axner/tools/centeringtool.php) as an aid when
dealing with any pottery related hand/arm/shoulder problems, and if so, did
it help? My left elbow has been giving me some trouble lately and I am
considering buying the centering tool to temporarily help alleviate some of
the stress on it but am not sure if it will really make a difference or
not...(I am right handed)...
Any feedback, on or off list, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

A couple of years ago when visiting my sister in law in Virginia, she took
us up to Blue Ridge pottery. The owner no longer did any throwing due to
damage to his hands from years of production throwing; but he had one of those
centering opening devices for his throwers to use.
I had never seen one in use and it was quite something to watch. I imagine
for a production potter, who may be having some physical challenges, it might
be a useful tool.

Following your breath is a good "centering tool." If you are centered,
you center the clay more easily.
Don't hold your breath. When you pay attention to your breath, you
will notice that during concentration, you often stop breathing.
When you stop breathing you loose strength. When you loose strength,
you loose stability.
In the beginning, it is easiest to concentrate on the out
breath. If you empty your lungs, from the diaphragm up, you will
naturally breath in (atmospheric pressure helps.) This is the reason
for shouting in martial arts. Often, we breath only with our chest
and use only a fraction of our lung capacity. This is just
"breathing technology." :^)
