endless variations, was nceca mug exchange - one last time

updated sat 12 mar 05

Hi all. Getting readt to head to Baltimore soon.

I just saw this thread on the timing issue .... and suddenly realized that
I'll also miss the CLAYART mug exchange due to my work being in the
Endless Variations show and wanting to be at the "opening" reception for
that event.

Crap!

Maybe something can be arranged that those of us in the Shino show can
leave our "mugs" in the bags and someone can randomly do a "bag swap" and
we can pick them up later? Or something like that?

Any current "Muggettes" got a solution? (speaking as a
former "Muggette")

best,

...............john

i too am in the shino show and am bummed about missing the exchange...

i'd sent a post about the first opening of the show on february 18th
that evidently got lost when the server went down. so here's a repeat:

i was able to attend the first opening - as i said, i'm one of the 150
or so potters whose work is in the show, so maybe i'm a bit biased, but
the show is AMAZING!!! malcolm davis did an incredible job of curating
the show, and baltimore clayworks obviously worked tirelessly to manage
and install the show. baltimore clayworks has also done a tremendous
amount of publicity and it showed - the show was packed from start to
finish, the media was there, several elected officials attended.
everyone who goes to NCECA needs to see this show - it's on the bus
tours, and you already know about the opening on friday from 5-9. i
can't wait to see it again! and looking forward to seeing all of you
there...

i'm not going to try to mention all the clayarters whose work is in the
show because i'm afraid i'd forget someone... all of you should be very
proud to be part of such an important show. i know i am.

John and Liz and Tony and Suze and all the other talented shino potters in the
Shino Show,

I want to go on record as opposing the requirement to be present at the mug
exchange.

However, since I am not available to co-coordinate the event, I haven't spoken
publicly until now. And I have no authority, since I'm just a worker-bee.

I've also been a muggette since way back and a participant since Columbus, OH,
so I have a bit of experience. Although it's neat to meet the maker of the mug
you select, that doesn't mean that you are going to be best buddies just
because you've met. There have always been a lot of mug exchangers present,
even when it wasn't required and some of my best conversations have been with
people other than the maker of the mug I happened to draw.

Many clayarters agree that physical presence should not be a requirement to
participate, or at least that we should have greater flexibility in the hours
of the exchange (particularly this year to NOT eliminate so many the shino
artists).

I would urge everyone to bring a mug or small piece for the exchange, just in
case the organizers have a change of heart or succumb to peer pressure.

My 2 cents.

Bonnie

I have to say, I second that emotion. I have only participated 3x, and have
never been a muggette (although I'm willing to be one if needed), but it is
sometimes hard to coordinate scheduling to be in the clayart room at one
exact time or another, especially if, for example, one is working as an
NCECA volunteer and does not have control over the work schedule.

Thanks Bonnie and Mel. The good thing is that the reception is from
5-9, so there is a pretty good time space there to fit everything in.
If we could have the mug exchange 1or 2 hours earlier, that would be
wonderful.
Trouble is, that there is always something, and I hope this doesn't
mean that someone else will be unable to attend the mug exchange.
Getting excited,
Leaving tomorrow by car, and it is snowing out now. It has to be
better weather in Baltimore.
Best,
Liz from Grafton, Ontario, Canada
