use of borax in soda firing

I'd like to toss this question out to all soda firers in the Clayart =
membership. Do you add borax to the sodium carbonate solution when you =
charge, and if so, what impact does it have on the kiln over time. Some =
of my students have done this in the past, but we generally build soda =
kilns that use softbrick except in the most high-impact areas, and I am =
concerned that the addition of borax in the solution will cause greater =
breakdown of the softbrick. Borax (sodium borate) is after all a more =
volatile flux than soda ash (sodium carbonate).=20

It makes harder slag on my SiC shelves. It seems harder on my floor
near where we introduce it. I suspect it interferes slightly with the
salmon color but am not sure.

I have mixed baking soda with soda ash. Baking soda is
milder.
