a thermocouple problem!

Hello there,

A friend of mine at an Arts facility has been having a
problem with one of his Kilns. He replaced an "R" type thermocouple
which had glaze on it with an "S" type on a Firemaster Killn controller.

The Kiln has been underfiring by 100 o C . (He's been monitoring it
with a handheld thermocouple). If he was the only person using the
Kiln it wouldn't be such a headache as he could set it to fire 100 o C
higher to compensate for the misreading but the facility is open 24
hours and he can't always be there to set the firing schedule for
people.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciiated.

Thank you in advance.

Kier.

Howdy y'all,

Does the kiln controller allow for different thermocouple calibration?
some controllers accept only one kind of theromcouple. Perhaps in
replacing it, he forgot to tell the controller what type of theromcouple
he installed? Might be that he will need to replace the replacement with
another type R.

The controller will have no idea what kind of thermocouple is in the kiln
unless it is told somehow.

Sorry I can't be any better help.

There is not a 1/1 calibration that can be made. Thermocouple output is
not linear with temperature.
On the Skutt controllers there is a chip that needs changing when you
change pyrometer types. You also have to change lead wire.
I would never change an R type to a K type unless i was in a situation
where they were getting stolen or broken often. R is superior.
