glaze/underglaze incompatibility

updated tue 22 mar 05

I am using a Mason Stain #6304 in an underglaze base (EPK, Silica, and
frit). My 05/06 covering glaze reacts with it turning the glaze yellowish
where. The violet color is not burning out and, infact, is fine at cone
6. The underglaze does not react with my cone 6 glaze. And my cone 05/06
covering glaze does not react with any other color, nor with a Velvet
underglaze of the same violet color. I have tried 5 different frits in
the underglaze and none seem to make any difference.
Any ideas? Does anyone have experience with this mason stain?
Thanks in advance
Nancy

Dear Nancy,

You might consider purchasing a Mason Stains color chart. Each of the
stains is listed and requirements given for optimal performance of the
stain. Different stains require varied chemicals to either be or not be
in the base glaze. Your clay supplier should be able to get this for you
if they don't have it in stock. I'm not sure where mine is at present,
but no doubt someone has one to hand and can give you the requirements
for that particular stain.

Best wishes,

I ordered a Mason stain chart from the company...I believe the website is
Mason Color, not stains...and I'm pretty sure it was free.
