Don Reitz show, which opened the eve before I left for Baltimore for
a pre-conference workshop, thus didn't attend with the mobs, is
absolutely fabulous. I bought the catalog, and catalog it is rather
than a wonderful book. I took my sweet time today in a series of
galleries (it was a weekday noon) that only had a few people roaming
around and I could relate to each piece as I viewed it from many sides.
As most of you know, some of the sizes are outrageous and Don had to stand
on a stool assembling to neck to his "teapot stacks," e.g. I watched him
work here, where he returned for a workshop though he taught here for
many years, and he often made six foot tall vessels for long workshops.
I have to return a few times. It is rich enough that I couldn't take
in more than an hour of gazing and wondering and reacting.
I have agreed to take a non-potter through the show in a few days and
had to check up on the definition of noborigama as compared to anagama
as I will be asked to explain.
There was a case of pots from Alfred's Glory Hole which Don had made when
a grad student in '61 and '62 which looked like a lot of '60s functional
pots.
Lucky to have this here as Madison is not a ceramics town though there
are a lot of pretty fine woodfirers in the area.
