lots of possible solutions have been given re the shed, mark mentioned
uneven ox/red. two sided pots in those "should have been an electric"
updraft gas kilns. he's so right, they are a frustration to fire, i had one
given to me out of someone's frustration also, but for someone who must
use one, i can add this, i have had success stacking with half round or
hex shelves and leaving a 3/4 inch gap between halves so that there is more
gas movement thru the middle of the setting. useing larger halves at the top
and leaveing slightly less to the walls clearance there will force the
riseing gasses to seek outlets around the pots as they move toward the
middle. slow fire at begining will help establish even heat and subsequent
efficient draft channels within the kiln. play with those spaces. use
glazes with a three cone range. fire at will. with tongue in cheek and hope
eternal in your heart. no, actually i got some good work out of that kiln
and learned some things also. savor every experience, only hindsight will
determine it's lasting value.
