Rob, search the archives for Vince Pitelka as the author and Terra Sig in
the "message contains" box. His recipe and methods are exacting, but the
result is excellent every time.

I ask because I need to use some for some pieces that I will be bringing
to a workshop this summer and have no experience with it.

If I must make it can you recommend a website with some good recipes?

Thanks, Rob

Rob brings up a point I would like clarified as well...can terra sig
be "stored" for any length of time, say, in a container with a good
lid? Could it be made in advance and then transported, or is it a
pretty much "on-site" process only?

Terra sigillata is available commercially from Clay Art Center in Tacoma,
Washington, according to a 2003 copy of their catalog. At the time it was
$7.95/pint, $12.95/quart, and $40.00/gallon and came in several different
colors. Their website is currently closed for maintenance, but their toll-
free phone# is 1-800-952-8030, and they are good about shipping things
promptly.

Dear Claybuds,

On several occasions when I have made fresh terra sig, my glass jars would
crack, circular about a 2" from the bottom. Since this has happened more
than once, I changed to plastic jars. But I am curious about the cause.
Anyone out there in clayland have any idea of how that happened to them? The
cracks seemed to occur about where the level of the heavier particles of
settled clay was.

Warm regards,

Rob,

Download my primer from:

http://users.skynet.be/russel.fouts/Files/Terra-Sig%20Primer.txt

It won't give you a receipe but it will give you an understanding of the
process which should improve your chances of coming up with at good sig.

I have 70 litre plastic garbage cans that I've been using for years. When
they get low, I just top them up with some more sig. The lids don't seem to
fit too tightly either but I've never noticed that water loss made much of
a difference (but then humidity is spelled B.E.L.G.I.U.M) ;-)

Piere Bayle was also said to have vats of terra sig.

To transport it for workshops, I put it in a big plaster mold and reduce it
down to about 1/3rd. At that consistency, it's like a soft paste and
reconstitues REALLY easily. Some people, like Vince, dry theirs out, which
is also a possiblility but doesn't seem to work with either of my sigs, nor
does boiling down to reduce it.
