Mel, (or Kurt),
I got the Kiln Plans article today from the PMI website and
have a couple of questions for you; more on the why than
the how.
1. You used a double row of bricks for the walls. As this
adds a fair chunk of change to the cost of the kiln I was
wondering why. Was it for stability or increased
insulation or ???. If for increased insulation and the
kiln was fired once a week to cone 10 do you have any idea
of how long it would take to recover the extra cost?
2. You talked about the doorway, but not about the door.
Do you just brick up the opening? As I've never built or
used a kiln of this nature do you think that a hinged door
would so greatly increase the complexity of this project
that it is not worth the effort and expense?
3. Are most of the concrete blocks under the kiln there to
get it up to a comfortable height for loading/unloading,
or is there another reason?
4. If you were going to exclusively use forced air burners
would you need the chimney to be much higher than the top
of the kiln. I'm thinking just high enough that there
would be little danger of putting your hand over top of it
and getting a trip to the ER.
I guess that's a couple X 2 of questions. But it sure is
great to be able to go directly to the authors of an
article like this and ask for further info.
Thanks...
