GUILD MEMBERSHIP
Membership in the Berkeley Potters Guild includes participation in two
annual sale events and weekend sales in the Gallery Shop. The Guild has been
in business at this location for 33 years and has a substantial customer
base throughout the Bay Area. These sales generate significant revenues for
many Guild members.
LEASEHOLD OWNERSHIP
Every person in the Guild is a renter of their space, and this rent plus
costs of utilities for kiln firings is paid to the Berkeley Potters Guild.
The Guild in turn pays rent to the building owner under terms of a lease
agreement extending to 2027.
Most people currently working in the building own their spaces. This is a
type of Leasehold purchase, which gives the owner control over the space,
permanent equipment and fixtures. The current owner determines the purchase
price, which reflects the value of buying into the ongoing business that the
Guild runs with its two annual Sales and Gallery Shop. A person wishing to
buy a space mae of 19 within the building occupied by the Berkeley Potters
Guild. Professional potters run their own businesses and also combine their
efforts to organize two large sales a year and a Gallery shop open to the
public every weekend. All participating members have jobs necessary for
these retail activities.
We are looking for a person who has some experience with clay and is a
professional potter or intends to become professional with their work. The
Guild members work both separately and together, and everyone is expected to
cooperate in sale jobs and maintain the common area. A probationary period
of approximately 6 months is required for any new person, and then their
request for membership must be approved by a vote of the Guild members.
