shimpo bantam speed control problem

I think there must have been dirt in the foot pedal
potentiometer making it erratic. After taking things
apart, blowing on them and reassembling all seems to be
well now.

Thanks for you input folks.

I have a 1979 Shimpo Bantam wheel (belt drive, not cone)
that has developed a speed control problem. I guess the
best way to explain it is the foot pedal has become
insensitive. It works, but sometimes I have to move the
foot pedal quite a ways in order to get a speed change. And
when the speed does change it changes by the amount I have
moved the foot pedal, which may be quite a bit. The speed
vs foot pedal position are not a smooth linear ramp.

I took the foot pedal apart and there is a potentiometer (?)
that is moved by the action of the pedal. The motor does
not even hum until the potentiometer lever is in the middle
of its range of travel. At full pedal the wheel spins much
faster than I would ever want to use. I do not see any
adjustments available in the foot pedal.

Looking inside the wheel housing there is a metal
electronics box with a fuse. Inside the box there are some
minimal electronics but no adjustments of kind.

I downloaded the Shimpo manual (2 pgs) for this wheel and
there is nothing there of any help. Under maintenance they
only explain how to replace the brushes in the motor.

This problem doesn't sound like worn out brushes to me, or
am I wrong?

Anybody have any experience with the Bantams that could help
me out with some suggestions?

Thanks.

If the potentiometer has a gear at the end it might need to be tightened up.
There is usually a small set screw that will become lose if it has a gear.

Could have developed some resistance inside the potentiaometer are
there specs on it or on the parts list?
Maybe some electronic tuner cleaner of video head cleaner spray would
help. Might screw it up to.
