pedestal display questions

Hi all, I'm planning on making some square pedestals to supplement my
current show display system (mostly using shelving units now) and after
reading everything I could find in the Clayart archives about every possible
pedestal system (made out of cardboard, sonotubes, wood, masonite, luann
board, etc., etc.) have decided to go with Kathi LeSueur's approach (thanks
Kathi!) and use luann board covered with indoor/outdoor carpeting and a
painted masonite top. I love this approach as it not only looks nice but
also sounds like it is lightweight, affordable, collapsible, durable, and
stable! I still have some general questions about pedestals though that I
thought might be nice to get a range of experiences/opinions on so am
posting those here as I know there are no lack of opinions on Clayart !

1) From either an aesthetic and/or for practical purposes (stability, more
display space, etc.), do you think the pedestal top should be the same size
as the pedestal base or a bit larger to hang over the sides by an inch or
two or more?

2) For those of you using pedestals to display functional ware, what have
you found to be the optimal heights for the pedestals? I realize this
depends somewhat on whether you are putting a small bowl on it or a very
tall vase/lamp, etc., but are there some size pedestals you've found work
particularly well or do not work very well for most of your pieces in
general? For instance, I'm thinking of making some 2 foot tall, some 3 foot
tall, and some 4 foot tall pedestals to display my ware and wondering what
other folks have done (my pieces are not tiny but are not huge either)...

3) Again, I know this will vary based on the nature/size of one's work and
personal preferences/aesthetics, but are there some pedestal dimensions that
seem to work particularly well for you? Like, are all of your pedestals 15"
wide or are they all 30" wide or are they all 8" wide or are they all
different dimensions or what?

Just trying to gain some insights before I make a bunch of pedestals and
then wish I'd made them wider, taller, shorter, narrower, etc. !

Thanks!

Hi Dorie,

I have a couple of photographs on my website that might help. They were taken of the gallery
installation of my current exhibition:
http://www.steveirvine.com/new.html
As a starting point we chose a height of 32 inches for the plinths. That is the height of the
rectangular units that have three pieces on them in the middle foreground. They have a slight
overhang of about an inch all the way around. This is a good height for seeing both the profile of
pieces and for looking down on them too. The units are about 24 inches wide. For variety and
rhythm in the display we also made some low 24 x 24 in. displays for the gold lined, textured
bowls, and some tall plinths for the larger pieces so viewers could get a close look at the surfaces.

Two suggestions for the display is to have lots of room around each piece, and to have lots of
light on the works. Glazes look best in sunlight, but the next best thing is probably halogen light
on the pieces.

Hope this helps.
