Thanks for the link. Looks like nice boxes from the images. Have you
used them? I might have to give a few a try by having them shipped
here ....... in preparation for some boxes that I will need to be made
over there for an exhibition there next fall.
Here in the states I have been having a local woodworker make my boxes for
many years. Decided I wanted to use local talent / materials for them.
Cost is higher than the Japanese ones.... but worth it for the "local"
factor. Construction is similar to the better made traditional Japanese
boxes..... I have them add tiny dowel pegs for strength. The wood I use
for them here is Poplar...... certainly heavier in weight than Kiri, but a
strong softwood and "American". The rails on the lids are hardwood to
counter the warping tendency of the flat lids.
For really large platters I have had them experiment with using high
quality, high lamination birch plywood. They actually have come out
pretty nice..... better than I expected.
