I am looking for a raku copper matt that has more purples, oranges and reds in it. I have not had any luck with getting these colors. I see them at shows or on line but the creators will not give up how they do it. I get more blues, greys and copper. All help is appreciated.

Hi Vicki

Thank you very much. I will try it.

Thanks so much,

In my experience with copper matt I have found its not the glaze recipe as much as how it is reduced that will give you those colors. Some people go to extensive lengths to get those purples on a consistent basis. This includes using oxygen and alchohol in the post firing process. This is my theory and what I found most helpful without going to the above is to fire the piece up to 1800 F. to adhere the glaze and then let it cool. to around 800. Fire up to 1100 and then reduce in newspaper. When you introduce the piece into the can you want it to just ignite the paper. You will notice that while the piece is hotter, the flashing will move quickly. You want to wait till the flashing has slowed then clamp on the lid until the side of the can is only warm. Also, if you don't get what you like, refire. And yes, the sad truth is, this glaze will fade, moreso in direct light. Also, if you don't get what you like, refire. I don't fire this any more, but used to use this glaze 400mg cop
per carb, 400 mg copper oxide, 200 mg Ferro 3110. Mix in smaller quantities as is it not as responsive when stored for longer periods of time.

Good Luck!

dry alligator fired to 1800-1825. Play with the temp. Too hot and the
colors go brown.

Hi Marcia,
Got your article in Advanced Raku CM. Love your work. Very unique. Question
- WHen you recommend to "reduce lightly" do you mean use very little straw
or do you mean reduce for only a short period of time? ANy help will be
appreciated. Like many I rarely get great coloring.
Thanx

I use enough straw to cover the ground, then lay the work on top of it.
Sometimes my buckets don't cover the entire slab. The air drafts cause
some color changes that I like.
When reducing in a bucket, I just throw one or two hand fulls of
newspaper.. You don't need lots of smoke but be quick and shut the lid,
and don't go hotter than you need. My colors on my glazes with my
pyrometer is 1825 or less. I believe all pyromteters are different
after a while and you must be aware of that. I also get great colors
in very cold temperatures ...like -20F. But I have been able to get
them at more ambient temps as well.
