advice re shimpo rk-2

I'm still using my original RK-2 going on 30 years, never needed any
parts. Did need occasional greasing, adjusting the cone drive. It
doesn't take a specialist to do it, just someone mechanically gifted
enough to see what rubs on what and what might need adjusting to make a
better ring-cone connection (I did it, and I'm not mechanically
gifted). The main part a stored wheel is likely to need is the rubber
wheel that goes on the cone. I think they may harden up from not using,
and they can wear down--but again, I've never had to replace
mine--probably 100,000 pots. I'd guess on the whole the chances of
getting a worn out Shimpo are pretty slim if it works when tested. I
did see a Shimpo at a camp once where the starter for the electric motor
had gone out--kind of had to engage it and give the wheel a little spin
to get the motor going.
Good wheels.
