In case my first post was scrapped by SPAM programs, here it is again with a
different subject title:
Does anyone have a good book or website to recommend for inspiration in
making feet for handbuilt work?
Thanks!

First place I looked was to Kathy Tripplett's books. Handbuilt Ceramics
has some good inspirational pictures, but not a lot of how-to.
Handbuilt Tableware was pretty similar. Then, believe it or not, I
pulled out my most favoritest book in print, "Wheel Thrown Ceramics" by
Don Davis. Despite being a throwing book, it has FANTASTIC
inspirational pictures of a variety of styles of pottery that can
certainly be extrapolated to handbuilding. Specifically, the teapot
section shows him making additions to a pot, including REALLY COOL
feet. I also looked at Chavarria's "Hand-Building Techniques" from the
Ceramics Class series and just feel the need to mention it because even
though it doesn't have a whole lot about feet, it's just a REALLY cool
book. I had not really looked at it much before. It's also really
inexpensive. About $14.00 retail I think. Hope that's a little helpful!

Lana Wilson is a source of much inspiration for me in terms of attachments
to handbuilt work. If you take a look at her website there's a page devoted
to "fun with feet and handles" which I believe is from her book (which you
can order from the site) here's the link.

Good luck and have fun.

Dear Gaye,
I have found a lot of inspiration for handles/feet in Lana Wilson's workbook
that is available through writing to her. I am sure there are a lot of
current new books that cover the subject as well.

Um, y'all.....I think the original poster wants to make FEET, as in HUMAN
feet, not feet like on pots. If I read the original post correctly, she
looking for references on how to make them more "real".

Hi Cynthia,
I also have a bit of a foot fetish. I just went to half.com and
purchased Wheel Thrown Ceramics. I got sucked into the "buy buy buy"
of the site and on impulse purchased Encyclopedia of Pottery
Techniques by Peter Cosentino. I don't anything about book or author,
but, since I have everything to learn, an encyclopedia sounded
appropriate. Thanks for your recommendation of Don Davis's book.
Can't wait to see it.

Wooden plugs found at any hardware store can make good feet. They are
designed to be used to hide countersunk screw heads They come in a variety
of sizes and can be simply glued onto the piece. They are often found in the
wooden dowel section.

My teacher used to encourage drawing feet when there were no other
models available. Look at your own, or those of a neighbor, they're
unusually well behaved, hold poses for long periods of time and can be
reasonably expressive and have lots of individuality.
Also see http://images.google.com/images?q=feet+art if you like your
inspiration more filtered, less "natural."
Have fun!

Try looking at some of Burne Hogarth's books, "Dynamic Anatomy" has good
drawings of the planes and mass of the feet (and other body parts).
They're in most books stores in the Drawing section.

Hi Gaye,
For some cool ideas on making feet for handbuilt work, check out Lana
Wilson's website (http://www.lanawilson.com/) and click on "fun with handles
and feet". I also highly recommend Lana's book titled "Ceramics: Shapes and
Surfaces" (ordering info available on her website).
