Y'all need to talk to Jon Kirkendall. He is a therapist (mental health, not
massage) and we were discussing his idea of a session on self-care. I think
what he had in mind would go well with what y'all are talking about. I am
copying him on this as well.

Hi Mel and clayart folks,

I know it's probably too late for this year, but I'd love to go a NCECA session on hints for taking care of one's body while working with clay. It could include preventive techniques, how to adapt as one get older, adaptition to physical challenges. . . .on the list goes on. Clayart folks could send in ideas and I'm sure a we could come up with a wealth of ideas. Perhaps it could be presented in a panel formate, but with lots of props. It would be great to include an occupational therapist who is also a potter.

Any interest?

Sally

I think this is a great idea for a panel. We could also inquire with
one of those sports doctors that teach athletes how to take care of
their bodies specific to their activities, including how to use the
body, how to prepare the body for the activity (stretches, etc), and I
personally know a fabulous yoga teacher who used to be into clay. She
and I have talked about a yoga for potters demonstration at NCECA
before. Sally, I'm in to help put this together.

I have been a certified personal training, and certified in
sports nutrition and resistance training.
I have always felt that body work is an important as a
"warm up" to doing our work, as we definitely use our whole bodies for our
art/craft. I personally got into it about 13 years ago, studying the above,
to understand
my own body and the muscle pains I was having as well as back spasms. I
decided to take my health into my own hands....first working with an osteopath and
then working with a personal trainer myself ...then realizing I needed to go
back to school and study it and work one on one with personal training
specialists to understand the importance of strengthening the whole body.
I now work out usually 5 days a week with resistance training, cardio, and
stretching....all part of preparing me for the clay work that I love.
If anyone would be interested in contacting me on ideas on a new aspect, but
an invaluable aspect to "training" potters, I would be interested in
discussing it.
Thanks.

I think it's a great idea. You're going to need a BIG room. ;-)

This is how the Clayart Photography workshop got started!

I think it's too late to be an official part of NCECA but why not make
it a Clayart presentation.

However, I'm reserving Thursday night between 6 and 9 for the 7th annual
Clayart Photography Workshop (since we're doing everything a year in
advance, now) ;-)
