Keith Smith “Sculpting the Figure: Making and Using Visual References”

May 14 – 15, 10 am to 5 pm

Min 7, Max 15

$160, Lunch included

How does one go about sculpting representational figures without a model?
This course will explore making three-dimensional models by casting parts of
the body, how to translate two-dimensional images into three-dimensional
form and how to accurately change the scale of work. Students will learn
various hand building techniques and will work with plaster and alginate
molds. Bring your measuring tape, sketchbook, and imagination for two days
sculpture making mania!

Keith Smith is a figurative sculptor working primarily in ceramics and cast
metal with a longstanding commitment to making and teaching art. In 1994 he
received a BS at Morgan State University in Baltimore, and an MD in art
education. He attended graduate school at The University of Florida in
Gainesville, FL where he received an MFA in 1999 and went on to teach,
sculpt and exhibit in several states. He is currently Assistant Professor
of Visual Arts at Kennesaw State University, where he teaches ceramics and
foundry. In addition to teaching and giving workshops/lectures, he exhibits
nationally and remains an active member of the National Council on Education
for the Ceramic Arts. His large-scale figurative narrative work can be seen
in Clay and Glazes for the Potter, 2nd edition, by Daniel Rhodes and in 500
Figures in Clay by Veronika Gunter.
