Over the past several years I have created and taught pottery in Pittsburgh, PA and China. I am
now going to try out New York City because my wife has been offered a great job. I know once I
get there I will find many opportunities but I thought that maybe some of you could give me a
head start. If anyone knows of places I could teach and work or artist co-op's, anything of the
sort. I would appreciate any suggestions.
I will search the archives but the search was not working when I just tried.
Thanks for the help,
Darin

Darin -
Start with the ceramic program faculty at the 92nd St.
Y - 92 and Lexington I think. It's a well-respected
program. They may not need you as a teacher but
they're probably connected enough to provide other
leads.
Also find the ceramic studio tech woman at Hunter
College. I met her at NCECA but her name escapes me.
(Nicole?) She may have ideas.
Places to see good ceramics besides Garth Clark and
The Met = Dai Ichi Gallery, Duane Reed Gallery. Also
a shop called Sara (I think) on upper Madison or Lex.
Last but not least, the Noguchi Museum in Long Island
City is a MUST.
For furniture, etc learn the thrift shops. And
discover TimeOut Magazine with its listings of free
events,
ENJOY!!

Dear Darin:
Try the 92nd Street YMHA; they have an extensive arts program, including a
fairly well-equipped ceramics studio. They are at East 92nd Street and
Lexington Avenue.
Good luck!

Hi Darin!
Welcome to NY! There are lots of great clay facilities around here,
but I can't say more wonderful things than what goes on at the Mudpit
in Brooklyn. They have an EXCELLENT studio and extremely well
equipped. Anything you could possibly want for your potting needs. I
was blown away when I first got there. They are also very easy going
and work with you the best they can. Their website is
www.muppitnyc.com
I've never been to the 92nd Street Y, but I have also worked at The
Potters Wheel. They too are a great studio as well. They're located in
Queens, NY
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I will be
more than happy to help you out :)

Hi Darin,
I'm setting up a pottery in Brooklyn, with a refurbished 20cu ft.
Alpine. I have the kiln moved and restored. Still have to set up shelves
and venting and other stuff. I have room for one other serious potter if
you're interested.
Best regards,

Darin,
We had some studio members who relocated from New York. They greatly
enjoyed working at Greenwich House Pottery while they were there.

Hello All:
We just want anyone coming to the NYC Metro area know that WE ARE HERE.
We are probably the best equipped ceramic facility in the area. I know for a
fact that we are the most laid back and have the most useable work space of
all the other studios. We make things happen when others say you can't.
Check out our web site or just give us a call. We are very accessible to
public transportation and parking is available.
