tucker's clay for cone 6

Thanks, Ron. I tried to email you recently ( to thank you for your advice
on another subject) but my mail did not go through. I would like to try the
Mid Smooth Stone because I would rather have the lighter color.

But...Why do you suggest mixing them? For throwing ease or would it be a
better clay for ovenware?

Thanks to John H. I have found a local supplier that is planning to order
Tucker's clay. I have ordered a Tucker's catalog, but have not yet received
it. This new supplier is placing his order and has asked what clay I am
interested in.

So... I am looking for a light colored clay body that would be good for cone
6 ovenware. It would be a bonus to find a clay that is not too finicky with
attachments. What do you Tucker's Clay users think I should try?

Hi Carole,

I would say Mid Cal 5 - it's a cardboard colour - 5% grog - John and I used
it in our book as one of the clays - good reliable body - easy to work
with.

If you want a lighter body Mid Smooth Stone - it's not white but not much
colour either - no grog - maybe mixed with Mid Cal 5 to get the colour in
between.

I think the best one would be the Mid Cal 5 and choose a proper fitting
glazes for the liner.

Tuckers pay for me to help their customers by the way.

Two reasons - a little more colour and some grog. There is 5% grog in the
midcal and none in the midsmooth stone.

I think most would agree some grog is a good thing in an ovenvare body.

The main thing is to get your liner glaze right for the clay you are using
- and minimize any cristobalite - there is none in either body.
