cone 1 glaze testing

This morning's kiln was the 2nd test kiln. Didn't get enough
information from the first, I think primarily because I didn't use
any colorants. Also because I hadn't gotten far enough into the
glaze calc program.

I complicated matters HUGELY by testing clay bodies at the same time,
I know that, wouldn't recommend it, but that's what I did. But what
made it insane is that I did it on RAW clay bodies.
So I am doing a regular cycle of my work and will re-do the tests on
1500F bisc and also cone 04 bisc. So I'll have more information.
Given all that, I have a bunch of promising tiles, some of them
jumping off of a glaze somebody else did and some that I dreamed up
on the computer.

I used the glaze calc mainly to lower COE and learn about materials.
Used a lot of petalite and talc to lower COE. Next time will
re-calculate to use spodumene instead of petalite and see if that is
better. Also read about Ulexite (sodium calcium borate), sounded
intriguing and will be getting some of that to try. Did all the
tests with and without the petalite to see the difference. I
expected less crazing as I kept the COE below 8.

I'd be happy to share any of the recipes but as we all know once
something gets on clayart it has a life of its own and I don't
consider a 1-2" tile any kind of working reality. So if anyone wants
to know ask me and I'll share it all. I will put them on the list as
I get them to function on pots.
