That was a very nice surprise yesterday afternoon. A nice segment on Warren
McKenzie, with him casually talking in his studio. I had not heard that he
has silicosis, and that is sad, although he has certainly lived a full, rich
life. He admits that they were all careless about mixing clay and glazes
without a respirator when he was young. There's a written transcript of the
segment with pictures at
, and I
believe you can listen to it from that site as well.

Warren was diagnosed with silicosis (mentioned in the feature) sometime
after his shoulder operation. Has slowed him down to 6 hours a day in
the studio (making work what takes most people 16 hours to make.) He has
slowed down from firing his kiln every month, to firing it every 6
weeks. Doesn't mix his clay anymore, but has Continental do it for him.
Studio is kept spotless.

Thanks a bunch Lee for bringing this to my attention.

I listened to the audio but also read the lengthy transcript
of the interview (upper right on web page). Mr. MacKenzie
said so much that seemed to reach into the core of me that
I feel like this is one of those life defining moments.
For the first time I think I truly understand what a potter
really is.
