Mugs, bowls, pitchers, lidded jars and pasta bowls
will be among the functional pottery featured in Val
Cushing's first-ever Kiln Opening and Open Studio on
Friday May 6 at 4:00PM. The show will also include
one-of-a-kind vessels, primarily high-fired stoneware
with some porcelain.

Val will open his studio for ten days starting Friday,
May 6, 4:00-9:00PM followed by 1:00-6:00PM daily
through Sunday, May 15. Mornings are by appointment
only. For information, call 587-9193. Cushing's
studio is at 1497 Water Wells Road in Alfred Station.

“I've always wanted to have a kiln opening event when
people in the community could visit my studio,” said
Val. “My goal is making functional pots that are as
satisfying to look at and touch as they are to use.”
Val's current work features lush colored slips as
well as rich carved surfaces.

A world-class figure in ceramics and long-time Alfred
resident, Val Cushing taught at NYS College of
Ceramics at Alfred University for 40 years before
retiring in 1997. He has recently been awarded the
designation of Regis Master for 2005 by The Northern
Clay Center in Minneapolis. His work is included in
major museums around the world including the Renwick
Gallery and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum both of the
Smithsonian Institution, the Houston Museum of Fine
Arts and the Brooklyn Museum of Art among several
others.
