Northern Arizona University is offering three seperate workshops this summer:

Japanese Lantern Making/Tozan Noborigama Wood Firing with Don Bendel
June 7th to July 7th. The focus of this workshop will be making Japanese lanterns which will
be fired in our five chamber Noborigama. Lanterns produced during the workshop may
become part of the Japanese garden that we are building adjacent to our ceramics facility.
Possible guest artists include Don Reitz and Jim Leedy. Participants are welcome and
encouraged to bring bisqueware and also to make work in addition to a lantern during the
workshop. This workshop is offered for 3.0 graduate and undergraduate credits for $650.00.
It is also possible to take the workshop for $350.00 for no university credit.

Salt/Soda Glaze Workshop with Jason Hess
July 11th to July 25th. The focus of this workshop will be salt/soda glazing with an emphasis
on clay body and glaze surface developement. Participants will fire a variety of different salt/
soda gas kilns as well as a catinary arch cross draft wood/soda kiln. Participants are welcome
to bring bisqueware and to make work during the session. Last year we fired 9 times in a two
week period. Cost = $650.00 for three University credits.

Wood Fire Workshop with Jason Hess
July 26th to August 8th. Wood firing with an emphasis on kiln design, clay body/glaze
development and kiln cooling techniques. Reduction cooling and slow cooling with oil
burners will be explored. Participants will fire a train kiln, catinary arch cross draft wood/
wood soda kilns and an anagama. Last year we fired 7 times over a two week period.
Participants are welcome to bring bisqueware. Cost = $650.00 for three University credits.

Accomodations & Facilities
Camping is available at campgrounds near the ceramics lab. Dorms are available for $16.00
per night and are within walking distance from the studio. The ceramics lab at NAU is
spacious and well equipped. We have nine gas kilns of different design as well as six different
wood kilns. We also have a traditional Japanese Tea House and are currently working on a
Japanese garden using native Arizona plants on the ceramics facility grounds.Our studio is a
relaxed, easy environment in which to work and Flagstaff is an excellnt place to spend the
summer.
