aardvark clay - black mountain

Hi Anne,
I have never used Black Mountain to cone 10, but I did find it a beautiful clay to work with. It handbuilds well and throws well. It fires to a nice brown at cone 6 oxidation. Have seen the results of it fired in cone 6 reduction and it was a very good dark brown. It can be a very striking clay and I would personally use it where I could leave some of the bare clay showing. I hope you will let us all know how it works for you.

Chris

Hi..

I was using up some old clay that was hanging around my studio. Found some
Aardvark Black Mountain. I was wondering if anyone who has tried it had
anything to say about it. Its a cone 10 brown stoneware, according to the
aardvark web site, but i guess i was wondering if anyone had anything else
to add re their likes/dislikes or any probs they may have had.
Its pretty nice to throw but i have yet to fire it.

Thanks :)
anne

I used to use it as an inlay into the hump when throwing white stoneware to
give a striped or spiral effect. I also used it as a slip.

Hi Anne,

Been a while since I used it. Here's what I recall.

Messes up your clothes well :)
Its very strongly coloured so glazing is an interesting proposition. One thing
I did do with it that I liked, was to make small bottles and apply a thick white
slip over them. Then you can paint black underglaze brushwork on the slip, cover
with a clear glaze. Gives a nice mixture of dark brown breaking through the
slip, the white slip and the contrasting brushwork, except my brushwork is
nothing to write home about :(
