A firing chart is simple and easy to keep on a clipboard in or near your
kiln location. It is most useful for those who are starting to begin a
firing cycle of a new kiln. It allows you to accumulate a quick history of
previous firings which affords a guideline for making adjustments
for the next firing; be it bisque or cone drop objective. This form also
provides a column for noting the heat color inside the kiln which will
anticipate the temperature prior to the bending of a cone. In early
learning stages I have used it hand in hand with my heat color chart to
become familiar with the characterizes of that particular kiln I am firing.
Today I can nail down temperatures, visually ,within less than 50
degrees of a pyrometer reading. I know that many "devices" are available
which will perform kiln firing duties. However, I have always focused on
the process of firing rather than accessories and how to operate and
maintain them. It is more of a Zen state of mind in approach, which results
in no less success in the end.
Obviously, this chart organizes in a consistent manner the tracking and
means for conserving fuel, when to adjust damper(s), and increase
fuel input. It certainly eliminates scraps of paper with notations, and a
log book because it's always at hand during the process.

You may wish to make modifications to this form before having copies printed
to attach to your kiln room clipboard!
