Kamia Shoichi (known as "Sho-chan" at my teacher's workshop) had an
exhibition at the gallery that represents me, during the Mashiko
Toki-ichi pottery festival. Of my teacher's students, his work is
amongst my favorite.
Kamia's father worked at the workshop before him, and he started
at the pottery at the age of 14, as a "shokunin" craftsman. When you
start at the pottery, you start as a shokunin or deshi. The shokunin
stays with the master potter for life, while the deshi studies for a
while and then sets up his own pottery. Kamia decided to become an
independent potter after spending over 30 years as a craftsman. He was
not let go easily, because he was an important working at our teacher's
pottery, but now he is an independent studio potter. He fires a
noborigama that has an anagama type chamber as the front firebox. I
like his unglazed work he puts in the chamber the best. ]
You can see some photos of his work (took them with my new
phone camera and am still learning) here:
http://togei.blogspot.com/ ( I started a new weblog just for the work
of other Mashiko potters.)
Today was also the last day of Shimaoka's show at the new
Tsukamoto museum that was opened in an old Minka (farmhouse.) I will
put those photos up later.
