Greetings.
I don't need help: my kiln does. Tonight I consumed an
entire bottle of good Cabernet Sauvignon in an effort
to put space between myself, my miserable pottery
results and my little Duncan electric kiln, old,
watched at that declining stage by a faithful
kilnsitter, as we ourselves probably all need in the
future.
Tonight kiln misery has struck again: the glazes,
regarding of cone temp. needed, regardless of clay
used, regardless of dipping, brushing or spraying,
will NOT rise and shine.
The cones I used are correct. The coils-all working
fine (?)- are in perfect condition. The lid closes
properly. I'm quite sure I'm taking the right steps to
pre-heat, fire and cool.
My new gas kiln is coming soon, but I hate to throw
this one out because it wil be great for bisquing. Or
maybe just to bake biscuits and crumpets?
WHAT could I be doing wrong? I have no objection to
another Cabernet but my soul needs more comfort than
that. Any ideas what's happening???

I think we need more specific information about what is not working.
You write: "my glazes will not rise & shine". Mine shrink and shine.
Need to know what the glazes are doing or not doing. Are they not melting?
The correct cones you used - witness cones on the kiln shelf or in
the kiln sitter?
Tell us more!
FYI - Don't think the gas kiln will solve all your problems - not to
burst your bubble, but it could bring another set of problems. We'll
deal with that later.

Marianne, I'm sorry you are having difficulty with your Duncan kiln.
Did you place witness cones on the shelf near the ware?
What is the firing range (in cone numbers) of the glaze?
Sincerely,
Arnold Howard
