Hi Carole,
I have never fired horsehair raku, but I do know that if you mix white =
spirit with sawdust and pile it onto the side if a pot and set fire to =
it, - it does'nt do what you think it is going to do. The bit where the =
sawdust is stays clean and the black goes around the edges in a sort of =
halo. You can get a lot of control that way, should you so wish.
So, - maybe there is some stuff on the horsehair that makes it burn at a =
higher temp? Something they use in grooming that is inflamable, maybe?
Dunno about the plants, pesticide?
I would experiment very cautiously, but I would experiment.!
If you do anything else exciting with raku, please let me know, i am =
taking a group of students to a raku day in July, it is the 10th time =
some of them have been, and they would love some new ideas.
We have done the usual suspects, including naked raku, I am currently in =
negotiations with a nearby stables so they can try horsehair raku. This =
is virtually unheard of in England b.t.w.
new markets anyone?
Best Wishes,
Pat.
