building a pugmill

Does anyone have info and/or blueprints for the construction of a pugmill? I've heard of the Harry Davis book that has plans, but I'm having a hard time locating it.

Check the archives,

I have them in pdf and I believe I found the link in the archives.

Paul, are you keeping up with your clayart?

Paul Borian has built on eof these as has Vince Pitelka. Both will tell you
that it is a very large undertaking. (I am NOT discouraging you. I have
built a lot of machines and loved every minute.)

These guys will have lots of advice.

Points to think about.

The motor and gear train are the biggest part of this machine as far as
determining design. You can make the rest of the machine fit these parts but
it'll be hard to do the opposite. Get your gears and motor first. Design the
rest to fit.

For what it is worth, you will need some serious machine shop work to get
this done. Welding, turning, drilling. All doable and fun if you are set up
or have afmily member that is. Not profitable otherwise.

Email me if you cannot find the plans online and I'll dig them out.

FWIW I found this book used online. try searching amazon.com. several
independant used book stores advertise their stock on amazon and you can
find a surprising array of titles.

Good luck,
Be safe,
Have fun,

Ben

Darrell, we have been using a pugmill built by a friend of ours at
Moonlight Manufacturing in Alberta. His name is Guy Ells and he has plans
available for several pottery related machines. The pug mill is a three
inch dual screw style and we use it without a vacuum pump although it can
be built either way. It is a chain drive unit made with easily sourced
materials ,and since we got it a little more than two years ago we have
put over ten tons of clay through it with no break downs or adjustments
required. His web site is http://www3.telus.net/public/gells/pottery
equipment.htm .

Have you tried an Interlibrary Loan approach? Check with your local public
or university library. If they can find it "out there" somewhere, it's
likely they can request it on an interlibrary loan and before very long Mr.
Davis' ever so practical spirit will be right there in your hot little hands.

Can you tell that Reference Librarians are some of my favorite people in the
Universe???

Peace!

Further to the post regarding Guy Ells site I made a mistake in his
link...it should be http://www3.telus.net/public/gells/pottery%
20equipment.htm
Guy does have a very interesting site, he builds some very rugged
equipment with farm tractor toughness, and has plans available through Gee
Whiz Publications.

Enjoy!
