A while back I said I would get Tony Ferguson images of kilns in
Dankwean. I put them up here:
http://falcon.tamucc.edu/~lkatz/k/index.htm
These images are of a kiln that is an amalgam of Thai and Japanese
kilns and was designed by Ajah Pit (Professor Pit) of Dankwean
Thailand.

Louis,

1. Please tell me what a squinch is (from the photos)

2. What do the stair steps on top of the arch accomplish?

Cheers, Linda

Ooh ooh me me me!

I had to look that one up too. A squinch is the arch form that transitions
from the corner of two walls into a round dome. Those extra bricks at the
back corners were squinched between courses to move from the squareness of
the walls to the roundness of the vault. Neato.

My guess is the stair stepping is added for insulation as well as
structural load which makes the arch actually stronger. Easier to cut the
bricks on one side only as well. Have you seen the dome in Rome, what's it
called people? building is hexagonal, hole in roof, statues around the
wall, maginficant vaulted dome, maybe a church now. It too had stair
stepping above the vault.

The squinch is the filler from a polygonal base to a round arch.

They look nice. They are all cut intvidually so they consume labor. Got
me.

Hi Taylor,
Do you mean The Pantheon?

A wonderful place to hear organ music. And Raphael is buried there.
