electrical problem with a brent wheel

updated sat 21 may 05

Anyone experienced a problem like this:

When I turn the switch on to start my Brent CXC wheel (circa 1998), the
wheel spins for a brief second and then the circuit breaker trips -- and
then the wheel stops dead.

The outlet is good...I've plugged in other large electrical devices to
test it and they work.

I've replaced the fuse in the black box on the wheel...doesn't seem to
help.

I flip the breaker back, try to start it again, and the same thing keeps
happening -- it trips the breaker and then dies.

Any ideas about what I should do next?

Thanks in advance for any advice or tips!

Maureen, unfourtunately it sounds like you have a short, to ground,
that develops a few seconds after you turn your wheel on. This is a very
probable cause of why the breaker (I'm assuming you are refering to the
circuit breaker in the breaker box) is tripping. Is the circuit on a
ground fault by any chance? They get persnickety sometimes. If this is
indeed the case my advice is to not reset the breaker and attempt to run
the wheel again until after you have determined the problem. This will
take some trouble shooting by someone who is familiar with the wheel.
One thing to try is to plug the wheel into another circuit and see
if the same thing occurs in the same manner. This will isolate the
problem to the wheel rather than what could possibly be an old breaker
that is slowly starting to go. This does not happen very frequently but
it does occur on occassion. Once again, plugging the wheel into another
circuit will isolate things for you.
Another quick thing to try is to get someone you know, preferably an
electrician or someone who is comfortable with and knowlegable about
wiring, and get them to check to make sure the little screw that is used
to clamp down the common (white colored) and ground (copper) wires to
the return bus in the breaker box is nice and tight. Sometimes they
loosen themselves up and all sorts of weird things occur. Make sure
whoever does this know what they are doing and turns off the power to
the box with the MAIN breaker switch.
If its your wheel it could be either in the motor (not that likely
and most expensive), foot pedal (those little potentiometers that are
adjusted for speed control. I think is there is a reasonable chance for
this and the little assembly is indeed the cheapest and easiest to
replace), or the control panel/power supply. You will need to trouble
shoot though unless you want to go the "black box" route where you
replace without really knowing what the cause is. This is not something
that I'd recommend but folks do it all the time.
Before you do anything else why not give the folks at Brent a call
and ask to speak to one of their technicians. It's been a long time
since I've done that but when I did (in the late 80's on several
occassions) they were very helpful.
Hope this helps

Hey Maureen,

I'm no expert but for some reason the wheel is asking for more juice than
the breaker will allow.

Have you unplugged your wheel and inspected every inch of wiring from the
plug to the box and from the box to the pedal? Check for any cracking. Is
the area around your wheel dry or wet?

How comfortable are you with opening up the pedal and checking to make sure
there is nothing out of the ordinary?

I just get the feeling that something on the wheel is shorting out perhaps
onto metal or even damp floors.

Take a look at your wheel while the smart ones on the list chime in on this.

Maureen,
Troubleshooting sometimes requires you to isolate components. If you remove
the belt cover and take the belt off the pulleys, you can turn the wheel
head without the motor. If it turns freely and without noise, try the motor
shaft. It should turn freely in one direction and seem to have a little
resistance to turning in the other.
A bad motor bearing can create enough drag on the motor to trip a breaker or
blow a fuse.
If the motor turns freely and still trips without the belt when you plug it
in and run it, your controller is probably at fault and may need to be
replaced.
Good Luck!

You have a ground fault. The first thing to check is the inside of the
footpedal. Did it get water in there? 2nd, check the inside of the
control box, there might be a loose wire. Look on the back of the
circuit board, if it looks like someone "spilled a coke 3 days ago" on
it, it's burned out. If it's none of those, call Dave Sturm at
