Rhonda,

You wrote about the 'expert' who said this:

Total hogwash! I do it regularly, with no ill effects.

Mudbuds-
Have a question about firing porcelain in kilns. As you know I am about to buy first BIG real kiln since test kiln does not cover needs. I have been looking/dreaming/sketching and I thought I would ask a question first. To some of you who are more experienced and higher up on the Mount Olympus scale, this might seem a bit silly.......
Most of the time I work with stoneware or red clay. I have never really ventured much into the "Land of Porcelain" for one reason and one reason alone- when I really got serious about pottery and ceramics, I was told after a College gallery opening/lecture,by someone who was supposed to be big in the land of clay (can't remember his name now) that if you fired porcelain in a kiln, you should NEVER fire anything else like stoneware or terra cotta or anything! The way he said it was if he was saying it was nasty like poo-poo or ka-ka (those would grandkids or kids will understand) and it was really bad.
Is he right? Am I never to know the joy of Ice? Since I am only going to have one big kiln and the test kiln, this would present a problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

Where summer is here now-afternoon thunderstorms and high humidity. Spent the last 3 days planting, repotting, painting furniture,re-doing and setting up all the outdoor areas. Bought a really nice big new umbrella for the table on the stone patio side...Gizmo BoboKittums, the 17 yr. old cat promptly climbs up on table and goes to sleep...great...the world's most expensive cat shade.....

Bull shirt!

Use you kilns to fire any thing you want, Porcelain, Roast beef! Chicken
potpies, Digital control makes it all so easy.

See http://www.nmclay.com/Customer_service/turkey.htm

I think this rumor got started by china painters who have to be fanatical
about debris and contamination in their low fire firings.

What nonsense !!

How would any craft center or University survive if every kiln
had to be used only for one color or type of clay body !!!

Maybe he confused firing a kiln with sorting laundry.

This brings to mind of all the garbage I have been 'taught' over
the years by 'experts' who lectured with MUSTS and ALWAYS and
NEVER when the real answer is almost always ... 'it depends'.

Now I listen to the quiet people who are never 100% sure and
are always willing to listen too.
