Hi,
I am wondering how commercial production molds are produced. I am aware of
the basic mold making procedure but would like to know how the plaster
mold around the molded piece is so smooth in commercial molds.
Am I correct in thinking that when the first waste mold is made the face
of the mold is sanded smooth and then another batch of plaster is poured
over this? When I make my waste molds I try to smooth the clay bed as much
as possible but I can not get the same smoothness as in commercial molds.
Does anyone have some good websites on production mold making? Thanks.

On symmetrical pieces that have a level parting line, you can pour a
plaster waste, sand it with wet dry sandpaper and then pour your first
mold mold part. The resulting "plaster around the molded part" will be
smooth.
If you clay up and then pour the first mold part on top of the clay
bed, you can sand that plaster piece also. Just be careful not to sand
the parting line.

I cast 1/4" flats of plaster on a polished granite slab and use them for the face of the first casting polished side up. Bed the model in clay, and rough cut the profile of the parting line to within 1/8" (oversize) Level the slab to the parting line and fill in the gap with oil clay smoothed with whatever's handy(usually a wooden clay tool.) makes a very nice face and for me it's much quicker and cleaner than fussing the clay bed. Highly recommend Donald Frith's book Mold Making for Ceramics. Try the library.
Take care,
Ben
