I wonder how the decoration was done.
Certainly is wonderful.

I am guessing it is thick hakame slip on a dark clay body, with an ame
glaze on top. Kawaii and Kimua both liked this technique.
Here is a Kawai (with copper red glaze):

I checked out the piece. I know the question was how he
had decorated it. I almost had a heart attack when I saw
the price!

If you have an extra $3,000 laying around. : ) It didn't even
have a bid yet!
Sure, I enjoy Bernard Leach's work. I've been working on
collecting his books. He's also one of my influences. I just
can't see couching up the $3,000 for one of his pieces.
I would be too afraid to touch it, let alone even look at it for
fear of it breaking. I would rather spend my $3,000 + on
something a little more useful.
At the latest gun show I saw a beautiful pre 1920's
Winchester Model 1894 in 38-55 win in Mint condition!
20" half octagon barrel! Under $2,000!

Steve, check out this Taiko drum: http://togei.blogspot.com/
It has the same zogan inlay on it. It was made for the Mashiko Taiko
drumming group. One of Jean's english students just joined the Taiko
group and says the drum is worth one million yen.

You get used to it Steve. We use my teacher's work everyday. Jean felt
bad when she broke a banchawan cup. I told her not to worry, because
they were meant to be used. And I promised to patch it up.

I am a knife and sword appreciator. Where I was born, is famous for its
swords and guns (some of their match lock guns survived to be
transformed into flint lock, and then percussion, and eventually into
bolt action, they were so well made.. Now, Sakai is know for its kitchen
knives and scissors. They also make bicycles.

All,
Before getting too excited, check the stamp. It appears to only have the
St Ives pottery stamp. I believe that work created by Bernard Leach
himself, also had his personal stamp.
Still valuable, still nice but not by BL.

Someone had a kokubin (square mold make bottle) on Ebay. They said it
was Hamada or Shimaoka or "Shimaoka made at Hamada's when he was a
student." It didn't look like a Shimaoka to me but the type of bottle,
if from the Shimaoka kilns, was not made by Shimaoka. These unstamped
"Shimaoka Kiln" kokubin and can be bought in town for only $150.00 No
body bid on it.
Shimaoka doesn't make many of these. There are also related yunomi that
are decorated by Shimaoka but only sell for about $24.00. I think he
still makes a few so they are available to folks who want to own
something from his kiln but can't afford the stamped work.
