What a nest of yellow jackets.......... I took a workshop a few years ago, ran home and made forms taught in the the workshop.............after a long day I turned around to wipe my hands and became startled...........Jeeze these are So & So's pots............I had worked on the new technique for several days and it that split second had the lighting bolt strike me! The many, many pots I had been making............. where NOT MINE!
It took me about 6 weeks working through the technique learned at the workshop to make it my pot. I have incorporated the technique to my pots.............that is what a workshop or teacher or another artists work can do for you. Your voice must come out in the final product, it's why we can share so much information......glazes, clay bodies, techniques. Work like hell and make them your pots....this is not an easy process, it is long and tedious but oh so exciting. When you walk into a show you should say..........Oh there is Joe Phabeats pots they have a presence, a look and you know who made those pots....................
I have one pot I kept high on a shelf in the studio to remind of one great workshop I took with a very good teacher on a cold March weekend in Indiana..............

Hi Sandy,

I like your post - it is not easy for some to keep trying - to make their
own pots - you have to learn to fail in order to get there without
following.

There is always a price to pay either way.

There is a trap when you learn to make pots by copying others - it is
difficult to turn back to failure after you are accepted.
