just made extruder stand

I just got a new extruder and did not want to bolt it into my walls. Made a
nice extruder stand for it.

It is made of 1.50 square steel. The steel is over 1/8 inch thick and very
heavy duty. New steel costs a fortune now. Total cost about $75 which
includes metal and having it welded plus paint. Thinking about putting it
on wheels, but not sure that will work unless the wheels will lock down.

I would appreciate any comments on design or anything I need to look out
for. I am going to try to use it next week. The second set of bars is for
a shelf.

Hi Randy,
I have been using my extruder with a stand for 30 years. I didn't plan
to mount it on a stand, but while I was shopping at the junkyard for
materials to make the extruder, I found a good pre-made angle iron
table for a few bucks (10 cents a pound), so I snagged it.
I have been very happy with having my extruder mounted on a stand.
It has gone from my graduate school studio, to my Dallas studio, to my
present studio, all with little effort to move it. I also take my extruder
with me several times a year, when I travel to present extruder workshops.
This would not be practically possible with a wall mounted extruder.
You can see pictures of my extruder and the stand in both Daryl
Baird's and Diana Pancioli's extruder books.

My extruder stand needs to be screwed to the floor, or else a couple
hundred pounds of ballast (clay boxes) are needed to anchor it in place.
Looking at Randy's photo, I'm afraid he may need some way to tie it
down, to keep it from "walking". Maybe not, maybe it will be fine, but
there is a lot of forward pressure applied when extruding. I think
adding wheels would be a mistake.
I also do not like the extra long tubing that extends on the floor in front
of the extruder - it looks like it is just waiting to trip you up -probably
just as you are walking by with a ware board of pots, heading for the
kiln.Watch out for that!

David,

Thanks for the comments. The Extruder table will be setting between two
tables so I won't be tripping over the legs. The table will also be moved
to another building where I make pots and if I have too, bolt it to the
floor.

I should be able to get to using it by this next weekend so I will let you
know how it goes and if I have to make adjustments,,,, just for information.
