Can anyone tell me how much magnesium is needed to get green from nickel?

Hi Dean,

I've been doing some colour tests with a clear base I have that contains a
little MgO. I get green at about 5% nickel oxide, but its already matting out
by then. The base is a clear gloss and contains only about 3 % talc which leads
to about 0.04 molar equivs. ie. not much. That said I don't know if you'd get
green with more MgO and less nickel - books say so. I plan to try experiments
vary the base glaze but have not yet done so. Also, this is at cone 10.

In redux I got sort of muddy or grey green with though glossy, at .6 to 1.25 %
nickel ox. In oxidation, it was brown until 2.5% when green and matting showed
up. You don't mention whether you want matte or not.

So my guess is pick some low level of nickel oxide (2-2.5%) and blend in
increasing amounts of MgO.

Sorry I can't be more help, this all the data I have. I would not call this high
magnesia, obviously, so you could try heading up to 0.5 molar equivs and see
what you get along the way.

I was planning to try this in a magnesium matt glaze at cone 6. The info you
provided leads me to believe that I have a good chance at getting what I want.

Thanks
