website sitemeters

Kim,

Site meters are mainly for the site's owner. They can be set at whatever number a person wishes (if they are dishonents) so in terms of relativity, they mean nothing. Check with you host for the website, they may support a counter via extensions or just insert the code from a service. In addtion, you can check your website's statistics which actually tell you more about who has visited, frequency, etc, etc.

I clicked on a potter's site in Edmonton Canada and fell in love with their map on where peepers are from. Take a look in our site so we can enjoy oogling more dots on our map! Offer suggestions in our guestbook link, too if you have a couple of minutes to spare.

For those that pay for this service when there are free sitemeters out there, would it be worth it to invest in the monthly charges? If you have one, how does it help you? Thanks!

Since we are the Edmonton Potters whose map you liked
http://www.outofthefirestudio.com I thought I'd reply. We use the pay
service because of the amount of detail they provide. The information
enables us to see what items are popular, what search engines and terms
are sending people our way, and what people are looking for. In one case
we noticed a lot of people were looking for mixing bowls with handles so
we started making them. If anyone wants to take a look at the information
that is available you can sign in as a guest at http://www.web-
stat.com/checkstats1.htm . Use user name: ootf11 and password: 1guest1.
I'll leave it open for the next week for you to have a look.

Kim, thank you! I installed the sitemeter that you use, www.web-stat.com/
and it is awesome. Unfortunately, the free version expires in 30 days.
Does anyone know of a similar but non-expiring free traffic analyizing
sitemeter (not just a counter)? Thanks.

This is a free website statcounter...
http://www.statcounter.com/

You can set it so that it is invisible. I use it on my school website.
It will keep track of the total number of page loads for free but it
only lets you see the log for the most recent 100 visits unless you
purchase the upgrade version.

The free version is a better tracker than most page counters. It lets
you see where in the world people visit your site from and what the most
popular pages are. On my school site we have had over 31,000 page loads
this year and some of our kids have relatives in India and Northern
Africa, and I can see when they visit the site.

Cheers,
John Post

Tony you are lucky I have a thick hide or I might take this personally. Oh
darn, I do take it a bit personally...as you can see from our stats the
numbers are an accurate picture of how many unique visitors we have had to
the site. That popularity does count for something when it comes to web
page placement in Google and the other search engines. Sure I could lie
about the numbers, but why? If I falsely set a number up around a million
but I wasn't getting the traffic, I'd still be at the bottom of the chart
as far as the search engines go and no one would ever find me. So...our
numbers are real, and yes we are bragging a bit. These results have come
from five long years of building and rebuilding. I know, or trust, your
post wasn't meant to imply we personally were fibbing, just struck us a
bit "sideways"..

Uhm, I'm sorry but why would you expect to find one that would be free? It's
unlikely that most of us provide services for free. If it provides
information of value to you then give them something of value. Seems only
reasonable.

John, thank you, http://www.statcounter.com/ is perfect, just what I wanted.
Gail, thank you, http://extreme-dm.com/tracking/ also looks great, but I
already installed John's.
Kim, thanks again to you for getting the ball rolling.
Everyone, these are awesome tools.
