Advice please! The floor of my train by the firbox now looks like a dogs
breakfast. It is sea of glass with chunks of shards sticking out and
although it is a war zone I want to keep putting my best pots there. Can I
just put down an inch or two of refractory material like kyanite or silica
sand. Kiln posts are sinking into the molten mess. Any thoughts would be
appreciated.
Cheers,
Tony

Hello Tony,

Just off the top of my head, it seems like an eight pound sledge hammer
might be the most effective treatment. A person could chip/pound out the
gooey floor and put in a new one. Was it hard firebrick to begin with?

For putting on a new layer, is the area too rough to lay 1.25" splits
over it? Heavy castable sounds better than sand to me.

Please let us know what you come up with to fix the critter.

Good firings,

Paul Herman
