Thanks for all your glaze testing posts Alisa. I have found them to be
helpful.

I also recently tested the Red Orange glaze published in Claytimes
Mar/Apr '05 using red iron oxide, Spanish red iron oxide and crocus martis.
As the authors suggested, crocus martis also gave the best result for me. I
found this glaze has to be applied in a rather thick coat (but not too
thick or it will drip) to achieve a result similar to that described in the
article. Where it's thick, it is a varied, deep, rusty, red-orange with
spectacular tiny iron crystals that make it sparkle in the sunlight. Where
it thins out as it breaks off textures and corners, it is more of a dark
chocolate brown. It looks especially good on texture as it pools and breaks
off corners.

The "depressing Yuck Brown" is manifested when it is applied in a thin
uniform coat over a smooth surface. Also, the crocus martis made a big
difference in the color compared with RIO.
