I can't help it, I am one of those academic types.
Ellen Dissanayake explored this topic in several of her books:
What is Art for?
Homo Aestheticus: Where Art Comes from and Why
Art and Intimacy: How the Arts Began
She has been a guest speaker at NCECA as well as other national events.
I think reading these books would substantiate arguments that art is
needed by humans.
Also the need to create is necessary by humans.

resources for a definite viewpoint.
