casting slip from throwing body

Hello Everyone,

I would like to ask if someone could suggest a workable mixture for
experimentation.
I can get the clay made into slip and have invested in some
defloculants and other chemicals that are sometimes used for casting
slip. But I hoped to save a lot of time by asking if someone could send
me in the right direction with a starting recipe.
I would like to try this with a porcelain and stoneware throwing clay
body, firing to cone 10 gas reduction

Many thanks

Dan

Greetings Dan -- Hi All---

On Pg 37 of the Laguna Catalog is a basic mixing recipe and directions. It
can also be found on www.lagunaclay.com on the corresponding page.

This is a base line recipe.

The difficulty in defloculateing a throwing body is that they tend to have
materials in them that may be a lot tougher to defloculate than bodies
formulated specifically for casting. Bentonites for example are overly
plastic and notoriously bad defloculaters and many fire/ ballclays don't
defloculate real well do to sulphates.

Porcelains with Nephline Synite will many times defloculate themselves with
just additions of water.

Start with the baseline mixing formula and see how it works--the big thing
is--- don't add more water than this formula calls for. Too much water will
only cause you grief.

Dan -

Cushing's HANDBOOK has some casting slip recipes and a
brief discussion of testing methods.

Good luck.
